When I met my husband, my weave was hanging on by a prayer—just like my life. I was broke, still dealing with the aftermath of a car accident from years before, and trying to rebuild from rock bottom. Yet somehow, this man saw through the chaos to the woman beneath it all.
When it came time for our first date, I almost canceled. My hair was a disaster and I couldn't afford to get it done. But instead of ghosting, I told him the truth: "I really like you and want to see you, but my hair isn't done and I don't have enough money to get it fixed right now. Would you mind if I just wore a headwrap?" He didn't hesitate: "I don't care how you come, I just want to see you."
Fast forward to scrolling through TikTok one day, I see this theory: "The softest life usually comes with the hardest wig." I laughed, thinking about my tore-up-from-the-floor-up hair when I met Ryan, and the comfortable life we now share.
Hard Wig, Soft Life is more than just a bad hair day or a luxury spa retreat. It's about that tension we live in—the contrast between making it work when everything's falling apart and finally finding some peace. This podcast wasn't created to go viral. It exists because I needed somewhere to be real before I disappeared into the version of myself everyone expected me to be.

I'm stubbornly resilient
I've been knocked down more times than I can count. From feeling like a grown-up at 11, to navigating the military, to rebuilding after a felony charge that flipped my life upside down—I've learned that my superpower is refusing to stay down. Sometimes this stubbornness is to my own detriment (the Lord is not through with me yet!), but I'm a work in progress. My edges might be struggling, but I'm still showing up.

The moment I called my now-husband and told him I couldn't afford to get my hair done but still wanted to see him? That changed everything. Vulnerability is not my strong suit—not by a long shot—and it's still not easy for me. But I've learned that the moments when you're most afraid to be seen are exactly when you need to let someone in. Sometimes your most tattered weave leads to your most treasured connection. Letting my guard down has made my life so much better, even when it feels impossible.

For too long, I lived like tomorrow wasn't promised—because honestly, it didn't feel like it was. Now I'm practicing the art of actually living instead of just making it through. My definition of success isn't about the hustle anymore; it's about finding peace in a world that keeps trying to sell us chaos.
